The Most Common Ingredients in Skin Bleaching Products

Many factors, from the sun to just plain old genetics, can be our enemies when it comes to having smooth, even skin. You might not have control over these elements, but when it comes to correcting skin coloring, you want to make sure you’re using the right ingredients. In this list we cover the most common ingredients found in skin bleaching products—the good and the bad.

Hydroquinone
When seeking out new bleaching products, synthetic ingredients can do more harm than good when treating blemishes and other skin problems. Unfortunately, one of the most common and most harmful ingredients in skin bleaching products is hydroquinone.
Hydroquinone is an ingredient to avoid. Not only does it cause immediate skin damage, but using hydroquinone can over time make your skin less able to protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays from the sun, meaning a greater likelihood of sunburns and skin cancer. Even though hydroquinone is very popular, it’s best to stay away and opt for safer options without this active ingredient.
Mercury
Most people know that this element is toxic—it’s been phased out of many products and has even been banned in some countries as an ingredient in cosmetic—which makes it all the more surprising that many skin bleaching products out there still contain mercury.
When applied onto the skin, mercury can cause skin rashes, discoloration, and scarring, and can reduce your skin’s ability to resist infection. When ingested, or when used onto the skin so many times that it seeps into your internal system, mercury can cause problems to the brain, nervous system, and kidneys.
Kojic Acid
For better, healthier skin, you want to use products that contain natural ingredients. One of the best, most effective ingredients is Kojic Acid. Kojic acid is derived from fungi that is beneficial for topical purposes—it has been shown to have bleaching properties without the harshness, skin irritation, burning, redness, and sensitivity caused by its more harmful counterpart, hydroquinone.
Moreover, kojic acid works with the deeper layers of the skin to produce lasting results. For this reason, we at Skintrium use kojic acid as the base ingredient in many of our products.
Alpha-hydroxyl Acids
Alpha-hydroxyl acids are naturally-occurring ingredients found in different foods: citrus fruits (known as citric acid), sugar cane (glycolic acid), sour milk (lactic acid), apples (malic acid), grapes (tartaric acid), and more. The various alpha-hydroxyl acids are used in skin care products to treat conditions such as acne and acne scarring, and to remove dead skin, to leave in its place firmer, smoother, younger looking skin.
To reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve skin texture, Skintrium offers the nourishing and gentle oil-free 80xF Face Whiten Gel, which contains the alpha-hydroxyl acids tartaric acid and malic acid to brighten and lighten the skin.
Arbutin
This ingredient is actually a natural source of hydroquinone, but when used on it’s own is a much healthier alternative. Arbutin is found in a small evergreen called the Bearberry and also in a Canadian plant called the dockweed.
There are three types of arbutin used in skin bleaching products: Alpha-arbutin, beta-arbutin, and deoxy-arbutin, with Alpha-arbutin being the most effective and stable agent. All three types however have the ability to inhibit melanin, and have been medically proven to be safe and effective agents for lightening skin.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C, which is also known as ascorbic acid, is a beneficial for the skin and body when ingested and used topically on the skin. Aside from its beneficial role with the immune system, Vitamin C plays a key role in the production of collagen, a protein that aids in giving skin its firmness and elasticity. As an antioxidant, not only does Vitamin C protect against damage to the skin from free radicals, Vitamin C also aids in the formation of scar tissue and skin repair.
For smoother, firmer skin and for the reduction of brown spots, Skintrium offers the Enhanced Facial Spot Eraser which includes Vitamin C along with mulberry extra and peptides.
While we all want skin that is smooth and clear, it should not come at the cost of your health. Be aware of the ingredients in your skin bleaching products and make sure that they don’t use harmful, harsh chemicals. There are natural alternatives available, and with ingredients such as kojic acid, alpha-hydroxyl acids, alpha-arbutin, and Vitamin C, you will quickly be on your way to beautiful, bright, and healthy skin.
